How To Make a Chunky Wool Knit Blanket

how to make a chunky knit blanketIf you can knit in garter stitch (or plain) and can cast on and off you can make a chunky knit blanket in any size you would like. By reducing the number of stitches on the needles and knitting it to the length that suits you.

Lets go! It's honestly easy, won’t take long and will be super warm.

This is how I made mine for our sofa:

I purchased some really chunky 20 mm knitting needles. Then I purchased some New Zealand wool yarn in 14 ply. The brand name is Naturally, Naturelle, 100% pure NZ wool. As the name suggestions this wool comes in natural wool colours and smells just like natural wool too. I made my blanket in dark brown. I also purchased 10 balls of 100 gram wool. I was really lucky to buy mine on sale for half price but the yarn usually retails for about $12.00nz each ball.
To make the blanket chunky use two balls of wool at a time so it becomes 28 ply when knitted together.
Then cast on the stitches. I cast on 100 stitches but they were really tight on the needles. So if I made a blanket again I would only cast on 50 stitches and knit the blanket longer.

So just keep knitting to the length you would like your blanket.

Cast off and then sew in the ends.

To wash your wool blanket:

Your blanket won’t need a lot of washing as wool is a natural dirt repellent anyway. But if you do it is best to hand wash it using a specialised wool detergent. Then lay the blanket flat to dry. Follow the instructions on your balls of wool.

And if you don't think you can make a wool blanket just buy one instead!
